Our TPS trainers will provide 12 hours of instruction on the use of many research based strategies that can be implemented in any classroom at your AVID site! The format of these two days will include eight different topics that will each last 1.5 hours. If you attend the 12 hours of the AVID Academy this summer, you will be considered "AVID Trained".

The research on Building Thinking Classrooms shows that when students work on thinking tasks in random groups on a vertical whiteboard, they are capable of co-creating incredible amounts of mathematical meaning and collective knowing-and-doing. In this session, participants will look at the Thinking Classroom practices that help students move this collective knowing-and-doing into individual knowing-and-doing while, at the same time, beginning to take responsibility for their own learning. The practices discussed will intertwine with, and make extensive references to, the recently published book, Building Thinking Classrooms (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning.

Open to TPS Certified Staff only: Kagan Cooperative Learning is all about engagement! Learn how to increase levels of student engagement, boost achievement, and foster a safe environment while addressing students' needs. This session is open to certified staff members (teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, counselors, SLP, social workers) who will be continuing their employment with the Topeka Public Schools. College credit is offered through a university that works with Kagan Professional Development. Details will be shared at the training by the national presenter.
